City Civil Rights Multiday Tour of Montgomery, Selma and Birmingham

My name is Jake, and I am a child of the Civil Rights Movement and an actual participant in the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March. I was raised in rural Lowndes County, just outside of Montgomery, Alabama at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. Lowndes County was the site of two of the most violent acts of the Civil Rights Movement, The murder of Mrs. Viola Liuzzo, who was transporting people who had participated in the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, and the murder of Jonathan Daniels who was participating in a protest to register black people to vote. I was involved in all of the Civil Rights mass meetings and protests that organized and registered Blacks to vote. My early years of involvement in the Civil Rights Movement has provided me with a unique perspective of the movement. Montgomery is a city that has been peculiarly touched by the great events of American history. The Southern Confederacy was formed here that set in motion our nation's bloodiest cataclysm, the American Civil War. The Montgomery Bus Boycott began on December 5, 1955 and lasted for more than a year. It is often called the beginning of the civil rights movement because it is the first large scale and extended example of blacks engaging in nonviolent direct action. The initial effect of the bus boycott in Montgomery was far from positive. The intergration of the buses in December 1956 was followed by bombings of black churches and homes which shook the city. The Freedom Rider riots of 1961 also shocked Montgomery. The Civil Rights movement swept across Montgomery in the decade from 1955 to 1965 and left many monuments in its passage buildings and places perhaps otherwise ordinary, but rendered extraordinary by the history made there. The events that occurred in this city during that decade powerfully contributed to developments that changed the entire structure of our national life.
